This past week, I went to Duke for more research. It was a productive visit, and I interacted with a lot of very nice people. While I was in the area, I dropped in on the Bennett Place State Historic Site.
Bennett Place was the site of three meetings between Generals Joseph Johnston and William Sherman. The meetings resulted in the surrender of all confederate troops east of the Mississippi River, ending the Civil War in the East.
Bennett House is free to visit. It has several interesting exhibits in the small museum and has reproduction buildings representing the original Bennett farm. Of particular interest to me were Dr. Samuel Morrisey’s (the 51st North Carolina’s surgeon) surgical kit and a replica of the 51st North Carolina’s battle flag. The site is worth a one-hour visit. Information is available at https://historicsites.nc.gov/all-sites/bennett-place.
