Company B Requisition to Replace Items Lost During the Battle at Goldsboro

The 51st North Carolina got its first taste of battle at Goldsboro on December 17, 1862. During the excitement and confusion of the battle, a few of Company B’s men lost some of their gear. When the company returned to Wilmington on January 2nd, Captain Hobson submitted a requisition to replace the lost items and to replenish the men’s worn-out shoes.

Special Requisition: 4 pairs of pants, 21 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of drawers, 4 shirts, 3 capes, 12 blankets, 2 knapsacks, 2 jackets.

“that the men lost all but the shoes while in the battle at Neuse River and that they had not drawn enough shoes to keep them from going barefooted and not the number which they are entitled to, consequently they are in need of shoes.”

Filled January 29, 1863, by AQM Rockwell.
